Tanyang Gongfu (坦洋工夫)

Tanyang Gongfu (坦洋工夫)

Tanyang Gongfu is a historic Fujian black tea and one of the earliest representatives of the congou (工夫红茶) tradition. It is regarded as a foundational style in the development of Chinese artisan black teas.

Origin & Background

Tanyang Gongfu originates from Tanyang Village in Fu’an, Fujian Province. During the late Qing dynasty, it became widely recognised for its refined aroma and export quality, earning a reputation as a benchmark of Fujian black tea craftsmanship.

Processing & Oxidation

Produced using traditional congou techniques, the leaves undergo careful withering, rolling, and full oxidation. Emphasis is placed on aroma development and smooth structure rather than strength or bitterness.

  • Oxidation level: Full
  • Roasting: None

Sensory Profile

  • Aroma: Floral, honeyed, lightly fruity
  • Flavor: Sweet, mellow, gently rounded
  • Mouthfeel: Smooth, soft, refined

Caffeine & Character

Tanyang Gongfu contains moderate caffeine and is often experienced as calm and balanced, with a warming but non-aggressive energy.

Brewing Guidance

Brew with near-boiling water using moderate leaf quantity. Short infusions highlight aroma and sweetness, while longer steeps deepen body without harshness.

Storage & Aging

Relatively stable when stored airtight and dry. While not traditionally aged for transformation, careful storage preserves clarity and fragrance over time.
